 डॉ. विलियम ओल्डहैंम (William Oldham B.C.S.LL.D.) ने स्व पुस्तक (North Western Provinces Historical and Statistical Memoir of the Ghazipur District) के प्रथम भाग के 43वें पृष्ठ में लिखा है कि : “Bhumihars, both by themselves and by ethnologists, are belived to be the descendants of Brahmins, who on becoming cultivators and landholders gave up their priestly functions. In popular estimation they share in something of the sacredness which attached to the Brahmins, and by the old law of the Benares Province, they like the genuine Brahmins, were exempted from capital punishment; but family priests or spritual guides are never chosen from among them by men of their own race nor by other Hindus.”

अर्थ यह है कि ‘भूमिहार लोग अपने आप और वंश परम्परा के जाननेवालों द्वारा भी उन ब्राह्मणों में से माने जाते हैं, जिन्होंने कृषक और जमींदार होने पर पुरोहिती छोड़ दी। जन साधारण की दृष्टि में बहुत से अंशों में ये लोग अन्य ब्राह्मणों की तरह पवित्र समझे जाते हैं और इन्हीं की तरह इन लोगों को भी बनारस प्रांत के पुराने कानून के अनुसार प्राणदंड (फाँसी) की सजा नहीं मिलती थी, (क्योंकि हिंदू धर्म में ब्राह्मणों को फाँसी देना वर्जित हैं)। लेकिन ये लोग न तो अपने ही समाज के पुरोहित और गुरु होते हैं और न अन्य हिंदुओं के ही।’ डॉ. ओल्डहैंम के बहुत से अंशों में 'अन्य ब्राह्मणों की तरह पवित्र माना जाना' लिखने का तात्पर्य अन्त के वाक्यों से स्फुट हैं। अर्थात ये लोग गुरु या पुरोहित नहीं होते, इसीलिए सब अंशों में अन्य ब्राह्मणों की तरह पूजा कैसे हो सकती है?’

56वें पृष्ठ में लिखा है कि : “A Bhumihar family of Pande Brahmins settled at Byreah in Doab pergannah, have for generations past been the Tehseeldars or land agents of the Domaraon faimly.”

अर्थात ‘पांडे कहलानेवाले ब्राह्मणों में से एक भूमिहार ब्राह्मण वंश, जो बलिया जिले के दोआब परगने के बैरिया गाँव में प्रथम से ही आ कर बसा है, बहुत पीढ़ियों से डुमराँव राज्य का तहसीलदार होता चला आया है।’
