Mr. William Oldham  writes that ‘Bhoinhars, both by themselves and by ethnologists, are believed to be the descendants of Brahmins, who on becoming cultivators and landholders gave up their priestly functions….. They, like genuine Brahmins, were exempted from capital punishment; but family priests or spiritual guides are never chosen from among them by men of their own race, nor by other Hindoos.’ : Asian Educational Services.
