Sun worship in India: a study of Deo Sun-Shrine

Traditions reveal that when the Shrine was freed by local Hindu Raja and renovated by king Bhairvendra in 15th century AD, some Bhumihar Brahmins began to work as Priest in the renovated shrine of the Deo. The descendents of Bhumihar Brahmins priest inhabit in village Eraki, 3 km south of the Deo. Bhumihar Brahmin priests acted as temple priest till 18th century A.D. During the beginning of 18th century Maharaja of Tekari, who also belonged to Bhumihar Brahmin, came at Deo temple in connection of Chathha varta. He found Bhumihar Brahmins acting as priest of the Shrine. He requested the king of Deo to allow Sakaldwipi Brahmins as the priest of the temple. He also requested Bhumihar Brahmin priest to give up profession of Priest ship in favour of Sakaldipi Brahmins who were priests of sun temples by tradition and shashtras. He obeyed the Maharaja of Tekari and gave the charges of Priestship of shrine to Sakaldwipi Brahmins but a nominal share in the income of shrine. Even today, the descendents of bhumihar Brahmins priest, who dwell from village Eraki, receive some share in the income of the shrine on the occasion of chhathha vrata.
